These questions haven’t got a straight answer, perhaps this is an area you can work on if you decide to become a scientist? I think (although I’m not an expert) that our dreams may be based somewhat on things we’ve encountered before as our brain tries to sort out information that it’s gathered. Several parts of the brain are involved in the process of dreaming, including for example the cortex!

Some say its our brain relaxing/resting and dealing with/storing all the information we dealt with while awake- thats why if you dont sleep for a long time you go a little crazy.

If you figure that out you will probably win some big prizes! super interesting!

this was in the paper in April this year (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/apr/10/scientists-identify-parts-of-brain-involved-in-dreaming).
