I realised at the stage of the Leaving Certificate that I had a aptitude for Science, and so, in applying for college, I chose a general science degree. I only did Physics and Chemistry in school, and so I had a leaning for these subjects.

I studied biology, chemistry and higher level maths for leaving cert. I really enjoyed biology in particular and loved finding out about how our bodies work. I then was inspired to go into a career in genetics after attending a talk at the UCC open day when I was in transition year. I studied hard to get enough points to get into that course and got in. I then studied for 4 years to get my degree in genetics from UCC. After that, I moved to QUB in Belfast to complete a PhD which took another 3 years.

I did all the sciences at high school, but always really love biology. At university I really loved biochemistry and followed that!
