      They expand or contract, usually because of moisture or heat. Wood in particular is made of fibres and these have lots of space between them for the structure to change.

      These objects get bigger and smaller in response to changes in the amount of moisture (water) in the air or changes in heat. These changes make the materials (usually wood or metal) expand or contract.
