Closer every week with every new discovery but I’m not sure there will be a golden bullet, more that we will learn to control the disease through personalised treatment. There have been so many false dawns in the treatment of cancer that we must not forget the most important person, the patient.

I am not sure “the sure” is close or even exists due to the cellular composition of cancer but what we are close to is the treatment and detection of cancer cells. If we can detect it faster and treat it more efficiently then we will see a huge increase in survival numbers. We already see a huge increase and I know as I work on quite a few projects that there are some amazing drug products hopefully coming on the successful completion of trials and this can only be good thing for all our futures.

This is a really difficult question because cancer is actually the name for lots and lots of different diseases, so we would have to find cures for every individual one. Even today there are so many scientists doing research on the different cancers, but there is only so much money and time, so it takes a long time to find new treatments. A friend of mine is working on a way to give antibodies (the cells that fight infections) from healthy people to people with cancer, designing the antibodies so they only fight cancer, and so they don’t harm the patient. I think it’s a great idea, and a new step forward- it is a long way from being a treatment though.
