There has been some research performed on a single photon, that is a single parcel of light and this has been observed passing through a time loop. There is a whole area of science where this may be possible and it is known as quantum mechanics. This is the area of science that studies particles that are smaller than atoms like electrons and even smaller particles. It is this area you may have heard that the Higgs-Boson was discovered at CERN in Switzerland.

I do not thing we could travel back in time as we do not exist in the quantum universe but we adhere to classical mechanics and therefore the possibility of time travel will remain in the movies unless you are a photon!

The rules that we know (or think we know) in physics say that time travel isn’t possible… but that’s just the things that we know, there is so much we don’t know, maybe it is possible. There are lot of implications for time travel though- all the things that could be changed by a single action, multiple timelines/universes. Time is such an unknown dimension to us, but affects us so much that it is really really interesting to think about.

It comes down to whether or not we are ruled by quantum physics (on the very small scale – think sub-atomic, quarks) or classical physics (on the very large scale – think planets, galaxies). Quantum would suggest it is possible for very small things whereas classical physics would suggest it is impossible. However, if you make the assumption that all large things are made from small things (galaxies are made from atoms) it might be possible to take the individual components and bend them through time but can we put them back together……..??
