Genzyme are a company that are specialists in treament of rare diseases and yes, we do work with enzymes!
Genzyme started out as a company treating diseases known as ‘lysosomal storage disorders’. these are genetic disorders where patients don’t produce certain enzymes that are required by the body, such as Gaucher’s disease, Fabry’s Disease and Pompe Disease. These disorders can result in symptoms that can eventually prove fatal if not treated.
Genzyme have developed treatments, where they manufacture and purify the respective enzymes and provide them to the patient via intravenous infusion. This is known as ‘Enzyme Replacement Therapy’.
