I particularly admire Albert Einstein and JR Oppenheimer (even thoughthey weren’t chemists, but nobody’s perfect!) – These were two scientists who, not only had brilliant minds but also for the sense of perspective that had for the work they were doing and how it impacted humanity.
I could go on FOREVER with this question. Rosalind Franklin: crystallographer who helped discover the structure of DNA; Mae Jemison: Astronaut; Rachel Carson: Marine biologist and enviromental crusader; Lise Meitner: mother of nuclear fission; Dorothy Hodgkin: another crystallographer who figured out the structure of insulin, and was a proponent of scientists working together, instead of competing; Grace Hopper: computer scientist who says her greatest legacy is not the computational languages she created or the compilers she made, but the young scientists she trained; Hypatia: Alexandrian mathematician who understood the importance of mathematics, and paid the ultimate price for her dedication to science.
As a young female scientist I admire all the passionate women who have gone before me to pave the way, to work through terrible conditions and discrimination and to sacrifice their lives for a chance to study and teach science. I admire everyone with a passion to make the world a safer, smarter and better place.
