Question: during this coronavirus are you in work doing work and trying to figure out experiments or our you at home doing that .Do you still have to go into work or can you stay at home
Fortunately, I’m able to do my work from home. On a regular work day, I spend the majority of my time playing with data that was taken a year or so ago. This data is on a computer in my office, but I’m able to access this computer over the internet. There have been a few days when the internet has been too slow for me to work properly, but most days it’s fast enough that I can work as well as I would if I were in my office.
The one thing I can’t do is get any new data. I’m meant to be travelling to Chile at the start of June to use a telescope for a new project, but it’s looking more and more likely that we’ll have to cancel that trip and hope to take the data some other time.
Hi
I’m working at home right now. I am running exams remotely for my students and also grading the exams once they are done, so that is work that is ok to do from home. Once the exams are over, I will do some work on my microscope at home and will write a paper up (from old experiments that I have results from but have not yet had the time to write up). I will also start planning future experiments for when we are able to go back to the lab. Unfortunately, as one of my experiments this year was focused on growing a plant under different conditions and the experiment needed the species to be collected at a particular time of year (March or April), we will have to wait until next year for that. Other experiments will hopefully go ahead once we are allowed back into labs. I was also supposed to be travelling to the UK in June for research but we have postponed that trip for the time being.
I have to work from home as the University is closed. Not everything can be done from home, no new experiments can take place. However, teaching and exam marking is working relatively well from home and so is writing new content. My students are currently writing reports or doing literature reviews or analysing data.
I’m working from home and being within computer science it is possible. Most of the work I do can be done online like writing collaboratively, read articles and attending workshop to keep your skills up to date.
My work always had 2 parts: experimental (laboratory work) and obtained data processing part (computer work). Currently I am working from home, as the university is closed, but I can process major part of the data which was collected before the lock down.
I am working from home as well! Lots of people don’t know this, but scientists do a lot of writing. I make medicine to treat cancer in a chemistry lab. When I am doing my experiments I am always writing notes so that I can remember how to make a medicine. After I make some successful medicines it is important that I share my discoveries with other scientists. This is done by writing an article in a scientific journal (just like a newspaper or a magazine, but scientists can read these journals on the internet!). So, lots of scientists who usually do lab work can spend their time at home writing about their discoveries so that the discoveries can be shared with everyone else in the science community!
I am in the final year of my PhD, so I am spending my time during quarantine writing my thesis. My thesis is like a really big book (it will be around 300 pages!!) that explains all about the research lots of scientists know about to make medicine for cancer and what I have done to add some new ideas! 🙂
