Ooooh that’s a very interesting question, thanks FinnickTheCrab (nice name :D). Down through the years, people have done some pretty insane things in the name of health, from bloodletting with leaches (the leeches used actually had anticoagulants or blood thinners which were transmitted using their bite, so they could be effective), to using arsenic to ‘improve the complexion of young ladies’ (this did make people paler, but also poisoned them, so on balance, less effective than the leeches). There is also such a thing as maggot therapy (I’m going to put a massive GROSS OUT warning before you read this one, don’t keep reading if you’re squeamish!), which was basically used as a treatment for infected wounds – they would put live maggots into the wound, and the maggots would eat the dead flesh, but leave the living, healthy tissue. Gross as it is, this was really effective of cleaning up bad infections, and is still used today in some places.
My favourite one (that works) is that people used to take the bark off a willow tree and put it in hot water and drink that when they had headaches or pains. Willow bark contains salicin, which is similar to aspirin and found in painkillers. Scientists investigated the willow bark to see what it was that helped relieve pain and made a medicine from it that we can all use safely.
One that didn’t work was blood letting. Doctors believed at the time that when you were sick there was something bad in your blood causing this – which is correct. They also believed, that this bad thing was at the surface of your blood and would make small cuts to allow it to escape your body. This unfortunately is not how infections work and blood letting did not help the patients get better.
Over time, doctors noticed that this treatment method did not help their patients and then stopped doing it. This is why it no longer happens today.
