      @xxkatemcxx

      I work in the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES for short), which is located in NUI Galway. In the NCBES there are people with lots of different skills and backgrounds, including Biology, Engineering, Medicine, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics and Maths working together to solve different types of Biomedical problems.

      In NUI Galway you can study a degree in Biomedical Science (https://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/undergraduate-courses/biomedical-science.html) or Biomedical Engineering (http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/undergraduate-courses/biomedical-engineering.html) and most of the large US and Irish Biomedical Device companies have their European headquarters in Galway.

      I’ve been lucky enough to be able to work with different scientists on a wide range of Biomedical projects over the past few years, including:
      looking at the use of stents to keep damaged arteries open in cases of diabetes;
      transplanting stem cells to fix heart cells damaged by heart attack;
      looking at the use of nanoparticles called Quantum Dots as a tool to help us see cells;
      and using Janus the robot to find new drugs to fight cancer.

      So as you can see, there are lots of different types of Biomedical research going on in Galway!
