Lol, to cheer the place up! I also put up birthday cards and other nice things. We currently have a vase of flowers in the lab but they are staring to wilt a bit! Keeping your workplace cheerful helps put everyone in a good mood. We sometimes put up notes and pictures too.
The giraffe actually comes from a chemical company. Companies often visit large institutions to promote their products, distribute catalogues, make deals and contacts. They give away stuff when they are there, mainly pens and stationary but you sometimes get really random stuff. I’ve gotten a mouse teddy bear, binoculars (!), an umbrella and a mug over the years.
