Most new drugs in development are poorly soluble in water. If they cannot dissolve in body fluids, they cannot enter into our cells and have a therapeutical effect. This is a major challenge in drug development. My current research is focused on formulation of amorphous drug systems to improve the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs. Amorphous materials are where the molecules have do not arrange themselves into a particular crystal structure. Therefore, it is easier for them to break free from their neighbors and dissolve in water. Amorphous materials are not very stable however, so my research will look at making amorphous drugs and keeping them that way until they reach the patient.

Every morning, I cycle to the WIT campus from my home. I started my work by preparing samples, which I subsequently analyzed using multiple analyzing techniques. After lunch, I usually work on analysis the data from the various experiments that I run, reading scientific papers, and preparing reports on my work for publication and presentation. Before I finish my day, I make plans for what I will do the next morning. When I get home, I cook my meal and watch a movie or series while I eat. If the weather permits, I prefer to go for a little walk before going to bed.

What I'd do with the prize money
I would use the money to organize a work shop/seminar to discuss the safe use of medicine among the young people and the potential technological advancement from the pharmaceuticals that we might experiences in future.
