Question: apart form the mass and leptons/quarks what is the difference between a positron and a proton

I am no expert in particle physics and you seem absolutely correct from a particle viewpoint. Pragmatically, protons are everywhere around us as they are part of our material world. Positrons are antimatter and therefore very rare under normal conditions – they would annihilate around our normal world here on earth. So in a way: you can meet a proton in a bar, but not a positron.
