Lasers are already in your computer commercially: just think about the CD-Reader or the CD-Writer…
The main concept of those is a laser beam that reads and writes a series of holes from the rotating CD-ROM, translating them in ones and zeros (binary data, our files).

And we are seeing many efforts to integrate lasers more in computers, for many different application.

What we are doing in the group I am in, is try to integrate laser directly on the processor chips, for the processors to use them to exchange data.

However this technology is still in development and to see it implemented on computers in the market will take still a few years and companies willing to invest in it.
This technology is conceptually working already (at least the laser related part, integration is the next step), but it is still too early to predict, but we can keep our hopes up.
