For me doing research is the best job you can find if you want to keep feeding your own curiosity.
I never get bored with new things and ideas, experiments…
It has many pros, but also some cons that you should evaluate before deciding to do research (normally the pay is somewhat lower compared to industry-based jobs and being completely new stuff you are working on, results are not always clear or what you expected, so there is a very hard job on understanding what is really happening in your samples. This can become really stressful, especially with deadlines)
I really enjoy what I’m doing. My work is so varied, everyday I could be doing something different or working on a different project or helping other people with their work. Getting up in the morning doesn’t feel like a chore because I’m excited about work. I take pride in what I do because its a representation of myself, its my research, they are my experiments and my samples and if I work hard I can publish my results and develop what I’ve learnt into a useful technology!
I also give lots of tours of our labs to students, I go to events like the BT young scientist and the national ploughing championship to do experiments and show off some off the research we do in AMBER to public. I just love talking to people about my research, science and nanoscience!
