I only listen to music when I’m doing something that doesn’t require much thinking. If I need to think, I can’t concentrate properly with music

It depends on people and on the mood, I suppose.

Normally I do listen to music both when I am in the lab doing measurements and when I am thinking.
The type of music changes radically depending on the task though: when I need to focus I often listening to some ambient music with no lyrics, in order to just get in the thinking mood.

Personally, music helps me a lot to go through the day and let me blow some steam off

If I’m in the lab doing experiments or processing some data at my computer I’ll usually listen to some music. If I’m writing papers, studying or trying to figure something out I usually don’t have any music on so I can focus.

Sometimes I like music TOO much, so it can be distracting. If I’m studying I like to have something on in the background but it can’t be my favorite music or I’ll just end up singing along.

When I’m doing long experiments that don’t require a ton of thought, I like to put on podcasts and listen to those, I find that listening to people talk can actually be quite calming for me.
