  PhD is a degree you get after you finished college. So you spend around 4 years in college, then you can do a masters (which lasts for 2 years and is optional in Ireland). The final step is doing a PhD (a doctorate degree), which lasts for 4 years. You study in depth and do a lot of research about a specific subject during it. And you get to be called a doctor afterwards 🙂
