• Question: What do we use titanium for?

      In my work, titanium is used in hip and knee implants to replace worn out joints. This metal is used because the body’s immune system does not react to it and it is very strong.

      In Stryker, titanium is used to make medical devices like implants – replacement hips, knees, spine and other parts. It is very ‘biocompatible’. That means the body does not reject it.
      Titanium is also light so suits implants – we really don’t want those to too heavy for the people who get them.
      As well, bone likes to grow into and on to titanium so we make foams with titanium – and it acts like bone and so the implants become part of the body – no worries about them coming loose
