I’m not a neuroscientist but I think it is the brain’s way of helping to solve problems in our ‘waking’ lives, of making sense of what happened in our day and processing the emotions we have experienced.
It is not yet fully understood why we dream, but like Sinead and Emma already said; some aspects of dreaming clearly help processing and sorting the everyday events for long term storage. It is also assumed that it clears some space for more important memories. If we would remember every little detail of our life we soon would reach our brains storage capacity, dreaming probably helps to sort the clutter from the important memories.
