      Dear CakeMonster,
After middle school (11-13) I chose a kind of High school called “Liceo Scientifico” that prepares you to Science related University degree

      Hi CakeMonster,
I did not want to become a scientist when I left school. I had no idea what I want to be, honestly.
I applied to various universities and different disciplines (Engineering, medicine, pharmacy) and then studied Engineering as this is what was available to me.
But one thing is that I liked math and physics in school and I found these two subjects in Engineering. So, I liked it!

I was always into science in high school and for my Bachelor and Master theses, I did a few research projects. However, I wanted to be an engineer first, so I worked 1.5 years as an electronic engineer and I realized that I miss the research part, the unknown, the freedom of conducting my own experiments. So I went back to science and so far happy about that.

I had no plan for my future career when I left school. I was also unsure about what I wanted to study in college. I chose mathematics because it seemed fascinating. And, years later, I chose this path for the same reason.

Yes, I did want to be a scientist when I left school. I was always interested in different fields of science (geology, physics, chemistry, astronomy) so it was a clear path for me. The funny thing now is now looking back when I know how different careers progress, I think I could have really enjoyed doing a lot of other things too (like engineering, or medicine). I just got lucky that I picked a science I really like doing every day.
