      I used to live in Tomsk, the city in the middle of Siberia, Russia. I love winter, though I’m horrible at skiing. I currently live in Cork and work at Tyndall National Institute. I am a tea lover and enjoy baking. I can’t imagine a weekend without homemade pastries. I also make costumes in my spare time, especially from movies such as Star Wars. I even have been to a couple of  Comic-Cons.

      In my work, I am mostly interested in knees. If you ever watched soccer or rugby you may know how often players have knee injuries. We are trying to help people recover faster.  Our body produces different signals: electrical, mechanical and other signals. And the knee isn’t an exception: it makes noise when we move and muscles produce electricity. We can pick up those signals with special devices.  Some of those devices can even be made as smart clothes, such as pants :-).

    • My Typical Day

      I usually start work at around ten. I spend my day doing experiments, usually recording people doing exercises. The rest of my time I go through the results and write about those results in scientific papers. I also often read and attend classes as there's always something to learn.

      I am not a morning person, at all… barely can get myself out of bed every morning, so if I start my working day before 10 – that’s great… Good thing though, as a PhD student I have flexible working hours, so I just work a bit more in the evening. I don’t have a precise schedule.  I might do some experiments with people. They usually do exercises and I do some measurements, for example, I can record noise from knees.   When the experiments are finished I usually go over the results and the rest of my time I spend writing papers for scientific journals or catching up on the latest news in my field. I also attend some classes, since there’s always something to learn.

    • What I'd do with the prize money

      I want to organize a STEM activity "Body electricity". In my activity, I want to explain how our body generates electricity and how important it is for body functioning.
