As per the latest research trends, the data can actually go up to the speed of light through quantum superposition principles. Which means that we encode data onto photons(light particles or waves), and then send them in quantum computational circuits, where we say if the natural barriers of the material (through which light is passing) are small enough, then the light can tunnel through with the speed of light.
To simplify, just imagine you are a photon, and you jump over the hurdles on the racetrack to reach the final point. It is similar to that, it is just that we want to make the hurdles small enough so that you can run with the speed of light, which is only possible if the racetrack (or material) is engineered good enough.
I can’t give a definitive answer, however, with the latest work in quantum computing holding speed, it could be in the next 20-30 years. I hope you can be one of the cool next generation kids who would be able to see and play with it:)
