My work is to improve the electrical properties of materials, so it does not impact animals, but it would be a benefit to public in terms of improved technology devices. Also, the lab processes are designed in such a way, they have no harm to environment.
I and my colleagues are developing devices that help people recover faster from knee injuries. Also, such devices can be used to see why artificial knees fail sometimes and how they can be improved to avoid that.
Ideally my research will play a small part in creating a society that uses more clean energy (wind, solar) and world were we get resources like metals in a way that doesn’t hurt the environment or disrupt peoples lives.
One of major things that Ireland/Europe wants to try and do is to make sure we have access the materials that allow us to transition to a carbon neutral society. A lot of materials used for wind turbines, solar panels, and other new technologies needs specific types of metals. Ideally we want to find them in Europe because we have really good environmental standards so we can extract them in a clean and sustainable fashion. Right now a lot of resources come from far away places like China, Africa, or Australia. My research helps with finding these new mineral/metal resources.
