That can happen, sometimes people have a very high pain tolerance or some condition that prevents them from feeling pain. Also, not all cases of broken bones are obvious and visible. People might feel pain, but assume that if they still can walk/move their hands, fingers – then nothing is broken. Not true, btw.
Breaking a pinky would be painful – no doubt, but it usually doesn’t affect the ability to walk as much as other toes. And pinky bones are quite small, so the shift of the broken bone is not easy to notice, even if there’s some. So it is hard to say if it’s actually broken or just badly bruised/sprained without an x-ray. Better check with the doctor if the pain and swelling/bruising are bad.

I think I heard somewhere that you can break your pinky toe quite easily without noticing it.
