Question: why do things glow when their hot

The glow is because the higher temperatures excite electrons to higher energy states. When the electrons drop back to their original energy level they release the excess energy in the form of a photon – a packet of light. This is thermal radiation transitioning from the infrared to the visible part of the spectrum due to large amounts of heat being applied.
