Every scientist would love to come up with a way to solve the world’s problems. Things like energy conservation, climate change and protection of the environment are issues we think about a lot. But sometimes what we do each day are much smaller efforts. I would like to think I’m doing good by teaching people how they can change the world by studying science.
I would like to think that we will all eventually do some good for the world as scientists. Sometimes we don’t even know we are doing good by pursuing our area of interest. A lot of advances in medical physics have even been made by NASA such as the invention of an ear implant which can aid hearing. Adam Kissiah, a NASA engineer came up with the design which has restored hearing for many people including himself, having had no medical training – he just used techniques he picked up while working at Kennedy Space Center! Space science also got the ball rolling for telecommunication when satellites were sent up – now they are used for long – distance communication which is very important for families who are parted by distance. Image processing techniques used on the Hubble Space Telescope have also shown promise in detecting early stages of breast cancer. What I am saying is, I know times are tough but we have to invest in space science as it has brought us an awful lot of things which have done good for the world. Sometimes we have to have a little faith in our research because some of the by – products of space exploration have helped people here on Earth an awful lot!
