We see a lot about parallel universes where things are slightly different in science fiction and fantasy – where people pop in and out of alternate universes all the time (the TV programme Fringe is well worth a watch). In the theories there are an infinite number of these, but there are disputes among physicists as to whether these can exist.
This is a tough one for scientists because the theory is not provable – or falsifiable. There are a lot of very distinguished physicists that think there are and more that think there aren’t.
It is nice to have the idea that in an alternate universe there’s a rich and famous version of ourselves running around.
The answer to this is that we don’t know, but there are some experiments that show that in some circumstances our universe ACTS like there are other universes. This is know as the “many worlds” interpretation of quantum mechanics. Until we have a way of testing whether there actually are other universes, the question will remain!
I think there are more possibilities in our universe than we can fathom. Science speaks about possibilities of infinite parallel universes and that will be even more fascinating.
