UCD Science and the UCD School of Chemistry and Chemical Biology both have very active outreach programmes. These involve school visits and we also host incoming groups in a brand new dedicated outreach lab where interested students carry out several experiments.
I would give the money to them to expand this programme.
Details of both programmes are at these links: http://www.ucd.ie/science/events.html http://www.ucd.ie/chem/outreach/
If I won I will use the prize money to buy new chemicals as we need them in this project and also I will try to make some announcement for this fuel, so large number of people will know the advantages of this fuel.
I do a lot of outreach for UCD. One thing i really would like to do is to set up a chemistry show for schools. Like we could call it the UCD Chemistry Christmas Lecture if we can do it at the end of the year, or brand it someway that is catchy. We can set up a show where various experiments are used to describe a story or real life events and situations. I used to do something very similar when I was a PhD student in Italy, we had a show every friday and it was packed with students from various secondary schools (also primary schools!). After a year of running the show, we had pre-booking months in advance, it was a big hit and I have no doubt we could do it in UCD too!
