While doing a PhD, there are periods in which there is just so much to work on, and even if you have ‘time off’, your brain may be still somewhere else rather than in the present with your friends and family, so yes, it certainly affects social life here and there
I think all jobs, especially professional careers or vocations can effect your social life. You choose a career or a vocation because you genuinely interested in the topic or the work life, not just the salary or the holidays. This means sometimes its difficult to switch off when you get home from work.
I have three kids so I lost my social life when my eldest came along. Only joking! My job has added to my social life, I have a good gang of friends at work, we have a good laugh at work & outside of work.
