Hi there five46can, water contains 3 molecules, 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen, that is why it’s called H2O.

If you get freshly distilled water then it will contain only H2O, two hydrogen and one oxygen bound together. Such water is not really nice to drink. Tasteless and does not provide you with the minerals you need to live.

Luckily, natural water contain many other elements that give them some taste and provide you with useful elements for your health. Elements like Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Bicarbonate etc… Some of these elements are shown for example on the label of most water bottles. These elements are derived from the rocks, soil or rivers where the water was flowing before being pumped to the pipe system, or bottled, or in some cases added after purification by the company bottling the water. So by tasting the water you may be able to know what types of rock it was in contact to before coming to your glass:)

Pure water has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom as Maxime stated below. However, the tap water you drink also has lots of other components in it, that are good for us and essential for our bodies to function. These are not exactly pure elements, like the calcium, zinc, magnesium but complexes of elements together.
