As far as we are concerned, getting contaminated or negatively modified by human influence.

The worst thing that could happen to water is that it gets so polluted it cannot be used as drinking water or a source of water for industry to use. Without water us Humans would not survive too long!!

I will hypothesize that the worst thing that can happen to water is when we add too many chemicals to it, by polluting with industrial or household water. Those chemicals could destroy all marine and freshwater life, and if it is completely destroyed there is no way to get it back. Also chemical contamination can be very difficult remove and sometimes it is impossible to remove. Sometimes we find specific bacteria that can digest methane or other pollutants. There is a bacteria called Pseudomona putida that can digest styrene oil (a type of plastic) into the biodegradable plastic PHA and can ‘cure’ naphthalene-contaminated soils.
