It’s countdown time!
I’m a Scientists, Ireland is running from 12th – 23rd November, and with only a few weeks left it’s time to announce the scientists and schools taking part!

Schools
So far there are 28 schools across Ireland taking part in the event. There are still a few places left and teachers can sign up here to take part!.
Space Zone
The Space Zone is sponsored by the European Space Education Resource Office (ESERO) Ireland.
Scientists
Paul Higgins | Trinity College Dublin | I study sunspots and try to find out which ones are likely to erupt and send super heated gas hurtling toward the Earth! |
Eugene Hickey | Institute of Technology Tallaght Dublin | Astrophysicist – we look for new planets orbiting distant stars. |
David McKeown | University College Dublin | I work on ways of moving spacecraft about so they point the right way. |
Colin Johnston | Armagh Planetarium | I explain the amazing worlds of astronomy and space sciences to everyone and anyone. |
Arlene O’Neill | Trinity College Dublin | I am a nano material scientist. All this means is that I work with tiny materials that have super properties. These materials will revolutionise our world, from bendy laptops to super strong spacecrafts. |

Scientists
Shane Bergin | Trinity College Dublin | I work with nano materials – the superheroes of the materials world: they are strong, have strange electrical powers and are, in parts, so tiny that one of their dimensions can measure as small as a few atoms: but there’s a catch: they stick together |
Naomi Elster | Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Beaumont Hospital | Some cancers find ways to stop being killed by drugs, and my research is finding ways to make sure that cancer medicines stay working so patients can live longer and happier lives. |
Eileen Diskin | Trinity College Dublin | I’m using samples from flamingo bums in a special way to help find a solution to one of the biggest threats to human health. |
Andrew Jackson | Trinity College Dublin | I study how evolution makes animals different in their shape, size, colour, intelligence and behaviour. |
Aggelos Zacharopoulos | University of Ulster | Looking for smart ways to get free heat and electricity from the Sun |

Kate Twomey | University College Cork | I eavesdrop on deadly bacteria that “talk” to each other and live in the lungs of sick people with Cystic Fibrosis. |
Jean Bourke | Trinity College Dublin | Tuberculosis (TB) is a deadly disease that tricks our bodies into ignoring it, I’m going undercover to expose it! |
Enda O’Connell | NUI Galway | I work with other scientists and a robot called Janus to find cures for different types of cancers and other diseases. |

Funders
We’d like to say a huge thank you to the event’s funders: the Dublin City of Science 2012 programme and the Euroscience Open Forum Dublin 2012, for making it all possible. It’s the first time the event has run in Ireland, and we’re hoping there will be lots of action! Keep track on Twitter by following I’m a Scientist and using #IASIE.
I am very proud to be part of this wonderful event as it will surely broaden my knowledge, and all of the others participating.
Hello there I am rather pleased 🙂
