I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here is back for this year’s Science Week!
From the 9th to 20th of November, 20 scientists will be competing for school students’ votes in two weeks of fast-paced live chats and questions on everything from making drugs, to blood cells, to nanoparticles, to what’s in your pizza.
For the latest news and announcements, find us on Twitter, @imascientist, and follow the hashtag, #IASIE.
Let’s meet the scientists and schools taking part…
Drug Synthesis Zone
This zone is funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
The Scientists
Sinead Balgobin | PhD Student at The University of Manchester
I make molecules of lots of different types- colourful, medical, materials… All using special compounds called “catalysts”, which make my job really easy!
Anne Moore | Lecturer at University College Cork
We figure out how we can make better vaccines that teach the body’s immune system to seek and destroy invading bugs.
Mark Collins | Almac Sciences
I work with scientists across the world together to develop new medicine that will help us all.
Neil Day |Genzyme, A Sanofi Company in Waterford
I am keeper of the knowledge for how to make medicine for rare diseases.
Florence McCarthy | Lecturer at University College Cork
We make heterocycles to affect cell cycles.

Food Science Zone
This zone is funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
The Scientists
Emma Feeney | Postdoctoral Researcher at Institute of Food and Health, UCD
I look at genetic differences in how we taste to see if they affect our food choices.
John Gleeson |PhD Student at University College Dublin
I’m trying to use bits of Milk, Chicken and Fish to prevent heart attacks!
Ruth Hamill | Teagasc
Nobody likes to pay for a pricey steak only to find out its tougher than three rounds with Katie Taylor, so I’m a zoologist turned food scientist on a quest to find the genes and proteins that produce tender, flavoursome beef and pork.
Andrew Quigley | PhD Student at Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland
Everyday I get to play around with milk and see how much vitamins or fatty acids I can fish out from all that dairy goodness!
Dilip Rai | Teagasc
I work with small molecules which we cannot see with naked eyes. These small molecules are present in our plant food that we eat daily. My research looks into the benefical role of these small molecules which we call ‘bioactives’.

Speeding-up internet by developing state of the art electronics.
Claire O’Connell | PhD Student at School of Physical Sciences/BDI, Dublin City University
I make really tiny glass spheres that glow in different colours which can stick to things that shouldn’t be in your blood, that are very good at hide and seek, and the spheres make them easier to be found.
Leona Mc Girr | PhD Student at Queen’s University Belfast
Forensic Science to Cancer Research -the life of a chemistry PhD student.
