Over the last week, students and scientists have been engaging online in I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here Ireland. Together they’ve talked about everything from developing telepathy through technology, to arthritis can be passed down through genes, to the pressures of being a scientist, and whether anything has ever held their science dreams back.
There are 4 themed zones in the event this November: Environmental Care Zone, New Materials Zone and Smart Data Zone supported by Science Foundation Ireland and Genes Zone, supported by Wellcome, plus Neon Zone, a general science zone supported by Wellcome and featuring a wide range of scientists. In total, in the first week there’s been:
- 1,483 school students logging in to the 5 zones
- 1,350 questions asked by students sent to the 27 scientists
- 624 votes cast by students for their favourites
- (almost) uncountable levels of conversation in the 40 live chats that have taken place.

This November, there’s still much more to come for Science Week. From 3pm on Tuesday the pressure starts to mount as the first scientist is evicted from each zone, with another following each day after. Who will survive to stay in the running for the €500 prize?
