I do eat a LOT of cheese actually. I’m vegetarian so I tend to get a lot of my protein from eggs, legumes, and cheese. They joke a lot at work about my cheese-eating, I’m a big cheese fan.
For ethical reasons. The way I see it, we are lucky enough to live in a society where there are enough options that we don’t need to kill animals for food. I don’t need to eat meat to survive. So, I don’t…
Obviously you don’t have to eat meat to SURVIVE in the context of modern society, but let’s talk about optimal nutrition.
Can you easily get all the necessary nutrients just from non-animal sources (and not supplements)? And are your food choices backed-up by the current scientific understanding?
I’ll chime in here as a non-veggie but with very veggie leanings. The vegetarian diet has pros (mostly) and the odd con (often people pointing to iron and Vitamin D3). But equally a Western diet also has cons (high sodium levels and saturated fats). So there isn’t one singular diet that will tick all the boxes. We have to take attitudes and culture into context when talking about diet. It would be culturally insensitive to suggest a vegetarian diet to an Inuit person as their diet has consisted of high fat meats required to provide insulation and energy for the climate they live in.
So it’s not a one size fit all solution. Most things aren’t. 🙂 But it makes for interesting discussion
