Well for postgraduates you get paid a stipend or grant of 16-18k a year. But we also often work as Teaching Assistants and get paid for that. Postdoctoral and research scientists get paid more… So don’t be surprised if they don’t answer as that’s rather personal 😛
The average post doc salary is between 32-40,000 per year, so its not too bad, but to be honest you probably get paid more if you were working as a scientist in industry rather than in a university. However, in universities, your hours are more flexible and the environment is not as strict, so there are lots of positives to working in a university.
I’ve seen postgraduate positions for 10k a year, so it really varies depending on the university/ funding agency. But as Dilip said, once you have enough money to get by then that’s the most important thing!
