Your nasal cavity feeds into the back of your throat. So that when your drinking and laugh (which happens to me far to often) the laugh forces the liquid to go somewhere and the easiest exit is your nose… It’s not the prettiest thing that happens
The connection there is really important to your sense of taste as this allows us to taste with our sense of smell. Try sucking a powerful mint, then hold your nose, and continue to suck it, then release your nose and see how the perceived flavour changes. When holding your nose you will only taste a sweetness, not the minty flavour, which is actually an aroma.
