Water can be stored and can move in very different ways underground.
One way is a bit like water in a sponge : the rock is like sand, and water is contained in the little spaces between the grains. When the rock contains water, it is called an aquifer (aqua is water in greek).
The other is completely different : the rock (limestone) is dissolved across thousands of years by the water, and it create big caves (like the one our prehistorical ancestors used to live in). The water moves in this big caves very fast, like undergound rivers. There are called karst. And I study them quite a lot : I go on field and do caving or speleology, going deep underground. And I create models of them with my computer.

My Typical Day
On a field day, I leave very earlier to drive all across Ireland to go on the West coast. I take measurements in rivers and spring, I walk around to survey the land (taking GPS coordinates for example). I take pictures and water samples. Sometimes I go in caves, but not alone because it is a bit dangerous. But most days I stay in the office, and I create in 3 dimensions models of what I saw on field, but in my computer.
