• Question: What first made you enjoy science?

      Hi folks,

      I always like maths and science and around 14 I read some articles about astronomy and particle physics and got dead interested.
      I also discovered I could do chemistry (at least in theory), and that got me hooked.
      The big moment came when I was in Germany and discovered you can combine Maths, Chemistry and Computers to do cool science; that was 17 years ago and I am still hooked.

      Hi Darren,
      My mum gave me a great book when I was about 8. It was all about how your body works and the illustrations showed tiny people and factory machines inside all the body parts; so the white blood cells for your immune system were policemen in little speed boats and the brain was full of complicated computers and mad scientists in lab coats. I loved that book – even though it took me a while to realise that they took some artistic licence with showing how your body works!
      It made me enjoy science because I realised that science is about much more than just being in a lab doing experiments. If you’re interested in understanding how things work then you enjoy science!

      My first experience working in a lab made me realise I liked science as a job because it changes a lot and is dynamic, but long before that when I was small I just loved asking questions and hearing stories. In general, kids are great for noticing details and looking at things in an original way! They are natural scientists!
