My favourite experiment is anything that uses light shone on a material and the result is the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen – it looks like magic!
My favorite experiment is called live calcium imaging.. In short, I grow brain cells on plastic dishes. Then I introduced a chemical which is specially made to attach on to any calcium ions floating around, but when it attaches it emits a flourescent light that we can see using a microscope. So what i do is put this chemical on living brain cells (in the dish) then put drugs on the cells to see how the calcium moves.
This is important because brain cells using calcium (among other ions) to generate the charge of their electrical activity!.. and it looks pretty when the cells light up!
