There are 3 main types of sugars; glucose, galactose and fructose. They are made up of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. 6 carbons, 12 hydrogens and 6 oxygens make up 1 of these sugar molecules. These sugars can be found in this form in many foods such as fruits and vegetables. They also make up the sugars found in other foods. For example glucose and galactose make up lactose.
Exactly! Lactase is an enzyme which our body makes that breaks down lactose. If you are lactose intolerant your body either does not make this enzyme or does not make enough of it. The lactose is then not digested and moves into your large intestine. The bacteria that live here then work on breaking down the lactose through a process called fermentation. This then creates the symptoms associated with lactose intolerance.
