Fermentation is a process where microbes such as bacteria or yeasts breakdown sugar into alcohol and gas. It is the process by which there microbes obtain their food. It is how beer and bread are made.

Ferment is also called to these yeasts or bacteria that Ciara has mentioned. They are added to some foods to make them, like bread, beer or salami.

Grapes on the vine are covered with yeast, mold and bacteria. By putting grape juice into a container at the right temperature, yeast will turn the sugar in the juice into alcohol and carbon dioxide. The grape juice will have fermented.
