The best before date is used for foods where the foods will not make you sick after this date such as dried or tinned foods. This date relates more to the quality of the food.. so it will taste and look its best before this date but is still okay to eat (within reason!) after this but taste, texture and look might be different. The use by date is then used for foods which are not safe to cook, eat or freeze past this date such as fresh meat or milk.

they are practically the same, meaning that it is safe to eat this food by this date.

Date labels on food were created with consumer safety in mind. But some of the labels result in confusion—and tons of perfectly safe food tossed out for no good reason.

Never eat a food after the use by date, you can eat a food after best before date but it might taste awful
